Padres’ Mike Clevinger Upset Over Bob Brenly’s Comments About Him

Padres starter Mike Clevinger threw six shutout innings Wednesday afternoon to earn his second win of the season. And while he was happy about his performance, something else was on his mind.

After the game, Clevinger called out Diamondbacks analyst Bob Brenly for comments he made about the pitcher during games.

“He spent half my outing talking about me getting punishments at The Citadel,” Clevinger said, via Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune. “… So I would like Bob Brenly to come down here and talk to me face-to-face and find out about who I am as a person and why I even got in The Citadel in the first place. I’m just sick of hearing him get this pass because he’s in the booth.”

Clevinger pitched against Arizona twice in the past week. In his first start last week, Brenly and Diamondbacks play-by-play announcer Steve Berthiaume talked about how Clevinger went to The Citadel for college.

“You look at the hairstyle and everything Mike Clevinger has, that whole persona going, you’d never believe Mike Clevinger went to college at The Citadel,” Berthiaume said.

“Yeah, he looks more like a Pepperdine guy,” Brenly added. “Go to class and then go surfing all afternoon.”

Then on Wednesday, the two also mentioned Clevinger’s unique windup, which features a lot of movement in between pitches.

Brenly has a history of controversy surrounding what he has said in the booth. Marcus Stroman was unhappy with Brenly’s comments about his durag while with the Mets last June, while former Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramírez accused Brenly of discrimination against Latin players as a broadcaster.
