Mercury Star Skylar Diggins-Smith to Miss Rest of Season Due to Personal Matter

Mercury star Skylar Diggins-Smith will miss the final two games of the 2022 WNBA season due to a personal matter, the team announced on Thursday.

In the absence of Diggins-Smith, Phoenix plans to sign a replacement player to be available for Friday’s game against the Wings.

In addition to Diggins-Smith being out for the rest of the season, Phoenix announced Monday that Diana Taurasi would miss the rest of the season with a quad strain.

A six-time All-Star, Diggins-Smith did not play in the Mercury’s last two games. With two games left—one against the Wings and one against the Sky—Phoenix (14–20) sits at No. 10 in the WNBA standings with its playoff hopes on the line.

Currently, the Dream sit at No. 8 and hold the final spot in the WNBA playoff race. However, four teams sit even with Phoenix at 14–20 heading into Thursday’s slate of WNBA games.

Through 30 games this season, Diggins-Smith averaged 19.7 points, nearly six assists and four rebounds per game while shooting 42.9% from the floor.
